The Life of a Cave Dweller

Living exclusively in the pitch-black underwater caves of Europe, the Olm thrives in an environment devoid of light and vegetation. Because resources in these subterranean ecosystems are incredibly scarce, the Olm has developed a survival strategy that borders on the impossible.

Research has shown just how extreme their sedentary nature is. In 2020, scientists observing these creatures were stunned to find one individual that remained in the exact same spot for 2,569 days—that is over seven years of not taking a single step.

Mastery of Metabolism

How does an animal survive while barely moving for years? The answer lies in an ultra-slow metabolism. The Olm burns so little energy that it makes a sloth seem high-energy by comparison.
