We all learn about the three states of matter in school: solid, liquid, and gas. But did you know there is a mysterious fourth state of matter that is actually the most common in the universe?
Check out this quick video to learn the secret of plasma:
Beyond Solid, Liquid, and Gas
As the video explains, if you add enough energy to a gas, something incredible happens. It transforms into plasma, an ionized gas.
In a normal gas, atoms are whole and intact. But in plasma, the energy is so intense that electrons are literally ripped away from their atoms. This creates a highly reactive, glowing energy soup of free-floating electrons and positively charged ions.
Powering the Universe
While plasma might seem rare on Earth, it is actually the most abundant state of matter in the cosmos!
Where can you find it? Look up! Our sun and all the stars in the night sky are giant balls of burning plasma. But you don’t have to go to space to see it in action. Here on Earth, you can see plasma during a thunderstorm every time a lightning bolt flashes across the sky, or in the glowing neon signs lighting up a city street.
From the center of our solar system to the storms in our atmosphere, plasma truly powers the vibrant universe we call home!
