Discover the unbelievable true story of the 1943 NFL season when the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers merged to form “The Steagles” during World War II.
The year was 1943. World War II had drained the National Football League of its brightest stars, as hundreds of young men traded their football helmets for military service. With rosters depleted across the country, the league was left teetering on the brink of total collapse.
Without enough players to field full teams, professional football faced a very real threat of going extinct. Desperate to survive, two of the league’s most bitter rivals did the unthinkable.
Here is the forgotten story of the NFL’s wild wartime experiment: The Steagles.
A League on the Brink
As the United States fully committed to the war effort, the NFL draft pool practically vanished. The military draft took precedence, and many of the league’s top athletes were fighting overseas. Several teams were forced to suspend operations altogether, but the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles refused to fold.
There was just one problem: neither team had enough healthy, non-drafted men to put a full roster on the field.
The Unthinkable Merger
To save the sport and their respective franchises, the owners of the Steelers and Eagles agreed to a temporary, unprecedented merger. They combined their remaining players into a single, hybrid squad.
Officially, they were known in the league rulebook as “Phil-Pitt Combine,” but fans and sportswriters quickly gave them a much catchier nickname: The Steagles.
The merger was chaotic from the start. The team had two head coaches who notoriously despised each other—Greasy Neale of the Eagles and Walt Kiesling of the Steelers. They clashed constantly over offensive strategies and team management. To make matters more complicated, the players, who were used to a fierce Pennsylvania rivalry, suddenly had to share a locker room.
The Legendary 1943 Season
Despite the internal tension and the strange circumstances, the Steagles actually found success on the gridiron. For one wild, legendary season, they played as a united front and finished with a 5-4-1 record.
Amazingly, this was the first winning season in the entire history of the Philadelphia Eagles franchise!
By 1944, the military draft had eased up just enough for the Eagles to field their own team again (though the Steelers had to merge with the Chicago Cardinals for one more season, becoming the incredibly unsuccessful “Card-Pitt”).
The strange mashup of the Steagles kept the NFL alive when it mattered most. It remains one of the wildest and most forgotten chapters in sports history.
