Have you ever wondered what the oldest known underground mine in human history is? If your mind immediately jumps to ancient copper, iron, or gold mines built by early civilizations, think again. Deep in the mountains of Eswatini lies the incredible Ngwenya Mine.
Long before writing, cities, or agriculture ever existed, humans were tunneling underground here a mind-boggling 43,000 years ago!
Prehistoric Engineering in the Middle Stone Age
During the Middle Stone Age, hunter-gatherers organized systematic, massive engineering projects. Archaeologists have uncovered astounding evidence of this ancient industry:
- Thousands of Tons of Ore: Prehistoric miners extracted massive amounts of material from the earth.
- Primitive Tools: Explorers at the site found ancient stone hammers and wooden digging tools left behind.
- Working in the Dark: These brave miners worked through pitch-black tunnels by the flickering light of torches, risking cave-ins and grueling conditions.
What Were They Mining For?
Surprisingly, they weren’t risking their lives to find gold for weapons or flint for survival tools. Instead, they were after hematite and specular minerals rich in iron oxide, which produce a vibrant red ochre and shimmering crimson powder.
In prehistoric societies, red ochre was the ultimate high-value commodity. It served multiple essential purposes:
- Body Paint & Cosmetics: Mixed with animal fats to create vibrant body paint used for tribal rituals and displaying social status.
- Cave Art: Acted as the primary pigment for prehistoric masterpieces.
- Preserving Leather: Rubbed into animal hides to help preserve leather goods.
- Sacred Rituals: Sprinkled over burials as a powerful symbol of life and rebirth.
A Testament to Human Creativity
The Ngwenya Mine proves that long before civilization built empires, our ancestors possessed incredible social coordination, drive, and engineering skill. It shows us that the human desire for art, cosmetics, and ritual is truly as old as humanity itself.
