When you look at a freezing glacier, a flowing river, and a boiling kettle, you are looking at three very different things—or so it seems. Do water, ice, and steam actually have different chemical makeups?

Three States, One Identity

As the video explains, it’s an interesting concept, but the answer is no! While water, ice, and steam might look completely different to the naked eye, they are all made of the exact same tiny particles.

No matter what state it is in—solid, liquid, or gas—each molecule contains exactly two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. This is why we call it H2O! The chemical identity of water remains perfectly the same across all of these forms.

What Actually Changes?

If the chemical identity remains the same, what makes them look and feel so different? It all comes down to temperature and how the molecules behave:

  • Solid (Ice): When the temperature drops, the molecules lose energy and pack tightly together, forming a rigid structure.
  • Liquid (Water): At room temperature, the molecules have enough energy to move around freely, which allows water to flow and take the shape of its container.
  • Gas (Steam): When heated to a boil, the molecules gain a massive amount of energy, bouncing apart and spreading out into the air.

So, the next time you drop an ice cube into your water glass, remember: you are just mixing H2O with more H2O!
