When you go for a walk in the woods and spot a mushroom popping up from the soil, what are you actually looking at? Is it a plant? A fungus?

The truth is much bigger—and much more hidden—than you might think. Check out this quick video to learn the secret life of mushrooms:

The “Fruit” of the Forest

As the video reveals, yes, a mushroom is indeed a fungus! But here is the mind-blowing part: the mushroom you see above ground is just a tiny fraction of the actual organism.

Think of an apple tree. The tree itself is the main plant, and the apple is just the fruit it produces to spread its seeds. Fungi work in a very similar way. The actual “body” of the fungus is a vast, hidden underground network made of tiny, thread-like structures called mycelium.

When the conditions are just right, this underground network produces a “fruit”—which we call a mushroom!

Spreading the Spores

So, why does the fungus grow a mushroom in the first place? It’s all about reproduction. Just like an apple contains seeds to grow new trees, a mushroom is designed to spread the fungus’s tiny spores into the air. The wind carries these microscopic spores to new areas, allowing the underground network to expand and thrive.

So, the next time you see a mushroom on the forest floor, remember: you are only seeing the very tip of a massive, hidden lifeform right beneath your feet.
