The Puppet Master of the Jungle

As the video explains, there is a tiny, terrifying fungus with the scientific name Ophiocordyceps unilateralis. This fungus doesn’t just infect an ant’s body; it actually takes control of its small brain!

Once infected, the ant becomes a literal puppet. It loses its free will and is forced by the fungus to climb up a leaf or a stem. The ant will then anchor itself firmly in place, biting down hard in what scientists call a “death grip,” while the fungus continues to grow inside its body.

Spreading the Infection

Why does the fungus make the ant climb? It’s all about spreading to new victims. By forcing the ant to a higher vantage point, the fungus sets the perfect stage for its final act.

Eventually, the fungus grows a long stalk right out of the ant’s head. When it’s fully developed, the fungus bursts out, raining its infectious spores down onto the forest floor below. Any new ants walking by will be infected, and the terrifying cycle begins all over again.
