Tasting With Their Toes!

As the video explains, butterflies don’t have tongues or taste buds in their mouths like we do. Instead, they literally taste with their feet!

Their tiny legs, called tarsi, are equipped with special sensory organs known as chemoreceptors. When a butterfly lands on a flower or a leaf, these receptors immediately start analyzing the chemical makeup of whatever they are standing on.

Why Do They Do It?

Tasting with their feet serves two major purposes for a butterfly’s survival:

• Finding Nectar: As soon as they land, their feet can instantly identify if the flower has a good, suitable source of nectar for them to drink.
• A Safe Nursery: When a female butterfly is ready to lay her eggs, she uses her feet to “taste” the leaves. This ensures she is picking a safe, nutritious plant for her caterpillars to eat once they hatch.
