Have you ever opened a package of banana-flavored candy and noticed that strong, artificial banana scent? It’s a very distinct smell, but did you know that eating those candies in the wrong place could actually put you in danger?
It turns out that fake banana flavoring and angry honeybees have a bizarre and dangerous connection. Check out this quick video to learn more:
The Scent of Battle
As the video explains, the chemical compound used to create fake banana flavoring is actually the exact same chemical produced naturally by honeybees. But they don’t use it to make their honey taste better!
For honeybees, this compound acts as an alarm pheromone. When a bee feels threatened or stings an intruder, it releases this banana-scented chemical into the air. This signals the entire hive that they are under attack, causing thousands of bees to go into defense mode and prepare for battle.
The Golden Rule: Run!
Because of this chemical similarity, eating banana-flavored sweets (or even a really ripe real banana) near a beehive can trick the bees into thinking their alarm pheromone has been triggered. The sweet treat in your hand might accidentally signal to the hive that you are a threat!
So, the golden rule of beekeeping: never eat banana sweets near a hive. And if you are out in nature and suddenly smell bananas when there are no bananas around… it’s time to run away fast!
